2024 President's Cup Results: Beating Persis, Borneo FC Follows in Persib's Footsteps
Indonesia's most prestigious pre-season football event, the 2024 President's Cup, was officially opened at the Si Jalak Harupat Stadium, Bandung, West Java on Friday (19/7/2024) afternoon WIB.
President Joko Widodo was present at the stadium in person, accompanied by First Lady Iriana, shortly before the Indonesian national anthem, Indonesia Raya, was sung.
For your information, the 2024 President's Cup marks the sixth time the competition has been held since it first started in 2015. This edition of the event is also the last to be held under President Jokowi's administration.
The President's Cup was originally intended as a replacement tournament for the Indonesian Super League after PSSI was sanctioned by FIFA in May 2015 due to dualism issues.
In its development, the President's Cup transformed into a pre-season event. The tournament was then held routinely, with Arema FC being the most successful team because they were able to win 5 trophies so far.
The opening of the 2024 President's Cup was colored with a traditional Indonesian nuance. Starting with the song Indonesia Raya, a creative dance containing cultural elements was then performed in the middle of the Si Jalak Harupat Stadium field as part of the opening series.
President Joko Widodo and First Lady Iriana themselves have entered the VIP tribune area since 15:05 WIB. Both of them also witnessed the opening ceremony accompanied by the Minister of Youth and Sports (Menpora) Dito Ariotedjo and PSSI General Chairman Erick Thohir.
