2024 President’s Cup Results Borneo FC vs Arema FC: Marked by Penalty Shootout Drama, Singo Edan Defends Champion Title
Singo Edan managed to make a surprise at the beginning of the second half. They broke the deadlock first in the 49th minute after Wiliam Moreira placed with the inside of his foot towards the far post, and was unable to be blocked by goalkeeper Nadeo Argawinata.
Borneo FC tried to find a gap to score a reply goal after that. Their efforts only paid off in the 62nd minute after Leo Gaucho took advantage of the ball that came off Thales’ foot to rip Lucas Frigeri’s net hard. The temporary score changed to a 1-1 draw.
There was no new breakthrough after Pesut Etam’s equalizer. Misery instead befell Borneo FC at a crucial moment nearing the end of the second half’s normal time because Stefano Lilipaly received a red card, the result of his violation against an Arema FC player.
Initially, the referee only gave Lilipaly a yellow card. However, the referee changed the decision after reviewing the VAR. Stefano Lilipaly was immediately sent off the field. As a result, Borneo was forced to play with 10 players for the rest of the match.
11 minutes of injury time was given at the end of the second half. This moment was used by Arema FC to score an additional goal.
Charles Lokolingoy broke through Nadeo Argawinata’s net in the 90+8 minute. However, the VAR review ultimately annulled the score because Dedik Setiawan was caught handballing before the goal was scored.
The score remained 1-1 at the end of the second half, forcing a penalty shootout to determine the winner.
