As the cryptocurrency market enters a new phase, a new wave of scams emerges. In this action, attackers are using fake X accounts to pose as popular influencers and carry out scams. The objective is to use the image of celebrities to attract victims and induce them to fall into fraud.

In addition to fake accounts on X, criminals also use fake groups on Telegram where they promise deliver bonuses like free tokens. However, these groups serve to steal data from wallets and access victims’ cryptocurrencies.

According to blockchain security firm Scam Sniffer, criminals encourage users to install software on computers and smartphones. This software contains malicious programs that can steal data and access cryptocurrency wallets.

Through a post on its X account, Scam Sniffer stated that scammers have evolved into the famous phishing scams. In other words, scams in which criminals pose as legitimate companies or individuals to carry out scams.

Evolution of cryptocurrency phishing scams

Just like phishing, in this scam criminals create fake profiles and comment on legitimate publications. When some user clicks on the fake links, they join the fake cryptocurrency Telegram groups.

Then the hackers ask them to go through a verification process through a robot (bot) called OfficialISafeguardBot. The robot creates a false sense of urgency and pressures users to quickly complete the “verification”.

However, this seemingly harmless step is a trap. When the victim fills in the requested data, the fake bot injects malicious code into the computer. When executed, the code downloads malware designed to compromise the system and steal sensitive data, including cryptocurrencies.

Scam Sniffer said VirusTotal flagged the bot as harmful. But the subtlety of the attack shows that it is one of the many new scams that emerged in 2024, such as the famous “pig slaughter” scam.

Last month, Casa CEO Nick Neuman shared a harrowing story of a phishing scam with cryptocurrencies that tried to target him. In a publication on X, Neuman described a call you received from a scammerpretending to be a Coinbase support agent.

The scammer claimed that Neuman’s password change request had been canceled and encouraged you to click a link in a suspicious email. When Neuman began to question the scammer, they gave up and revealed the true nature of the operation.
