Ancelotti Reveals Violence Occurred When Madrid Played Against Atletico

Jakarta, Beritasatu.com – Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti highlighted the occurrence of violence in matches squad his team against city team Atletico Madrid, Monday (30/9/2024) early morning WIB at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

The eighth week’s match ended in a 1-1 draw. Real Madrid took the lead thanks to Eder Militao’s goal in the 64th minute. However, the hosts were able to equalize the score when the match was about to end. This match was also marked by the issuance of a red card to Altletico player Marcos Llorente at the end of the match.

“I respect everyone’s opinion. However, violence that occurs on the pitch is clearly unacceptable, and those who commit it do not deserve to be in football or in society,” said Ancelotti, Tuesday (1/10/2024).

The Italian coach felt annoyed because there were parties who tried to divert focus from the violent incident, by blaming his team’s goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois.

Ancelotti emphasized that Courtois was innocent, because he only reacted to threats shouted by hard-line Atletico Madrid supporters, Frente Atletico, who were behind his goal.

“Talking about Courtois’ attitude when supporters shouted ‘I hope you die’ several times is an attempt to divert attention from the real problem,” he stressed.

During the match, Courtois was the target of throwing objects from the southern stands of the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

The Belgian goalkeeper played for Atletico Madrid from 2011 to 2014 as a loan player from Chelsea. This may be one of the reasons for the fans’ hatred towards him.

The throw occurred after Eder Militao scored for Real Madrid in the 64th minute, which caused the match to be stopped for around 10 minutes. Sports media The Athletic reported that several objects, including a cigarette lighter and a water bottle, were thrown at Courtois.

Ancelotti emphasized that such incidents should not occur in football. “I’m speaking generally, this is not about supporters of Atletico, Real Madrid, Barcelona or Villarreal, but violence in any form must be eliminated,” said Ancelotti.

When asked about the applause given by Atletico players to Frente Atletico after the throwing incident, Ancelotti refused to comment.

“I don’t want to respond to other people’s behavior, especially friends I respect. I have no comments about that,” he concluded.

The draw in the Madrid derby meant that Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid were still unable to close the gap with the top of the 2024/2025 La Liga standings, Barcelona.

Until the eighth week, Real Madrid was in second place with 18 points, while Atletico Madrid was in fourth place with 16 points. Barcelona still leads the standings with 21 points, even though they just lost 2-4 to Osasuna.
