Apple revealed the existence of a vulnerability in its devices that allows the remote execution of malicious code through JavaScript on the web. This issue could expose users to targeted attacks and even theft of cryptocurrency-related data.

As disclosed by Apple itself, the flaw is present in the JavaScriptCore and WebKit tools, used on devices such as iPhones, iPads and MacBooks. The company recommended that users immediately update their software to fix the vulnerability.

Researchers from Google’s threat analysis group identified the flaw. According to them. the vulnerability allows the processing of malicious web content. This results in cross-site scripting attacks. Apple admitted that hackers may have already exploited the breach on Mac systems with Intel processors.

On iPhone and iPad devices, the vulnerability made it possible to execute arbitrary code when accessing malicious pages. Apple has assured that the latest update resolves the issue.

Vulnerability in Apple devices

Cybersecurity experts warned that the flaw could compromise sensitive data such as private keys and passwords stored in the browser. Jeremiah O’Connor, CTO of cybersecurity company Trugard, stated that users of outdated devices could have their cryptocurrencies stolen.

In the crypto community, the news quickly resonated. Former Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao took to social media to recommend that users of MacBooks with Intel CPUs update their devices as soon as possible.

In addition to this flaw, researchers discovered, in March, a vulnerability in Apple’s M1, M2 and M3 series chips. The problem is related to the prefetching mechanism, which can store sensitive data in the processor’s cache memory, allowing the reconstruction of cryptographic keys that should be inaccessible.

According to ArsTechnica, this chip-level flaw cannot be fixed with software updates. Although there are workarounds, they compromise device performance in exchange for greater security.
