Apple Says Goodbye to LCD, All iPhones Will Use OLED

Todaysgist.com, Jakarta – Apple is reportedly ready to make a major change by replacing all iPhone screens with OLED, including for the more affordable iPhone SE model.

Quoted from GizchinaSunday (8/9/2024), according to a Nikkei report, Apple is reportedly going to completely abandon LCD screens for the iPhone next year.

This change marks a major shift in Apple’s display strategy, as OLED is known to be a more advanced technology that will replace LCD.

Impact on Japanese Suppliers

The decision is also said to affect two major Japanese suppliers, Display Inc. (JDI) and Sharp. Both are known to have dominated Apple’s display supply chain.

About 10 years ago, they controlled 70 percent of the iPhone display market, but now only supply LCDs for the iPhone SE model. With this planned change, their role in the iPhone production line is likely to end.

The Rise of South Korean and Chinese Suppliers

Instead, Apple has started ordering OLED displays from Chinese and South Korean companies such as BOE Technology Group and LG Display, the two companies that are the main suppliers of OLED displays for premium iPhone models.

Samsung, also from South Korea, currently holds about 50 percent of the iPhone OLED market share, followed by LG Display with 30 percent and BOE with 20 percent.

Therefore, the plan to use OLED screens for all iPhone products also marks Apple’s full shift to suppliers from South Korea and China.

Advantages of OLED Technology

OLED screens are known for their ability to produce sharper contrast and have more vibrant colors than LCDs.

OLED displays do not require a backlight because they use organic compounds that emit their own light. This provides a better visual experience, especially for watching movies, playing games, or viewing photos.
