Arteta Apologizes After Arsenal Lost the Title to Manchester City
This season has been an anticlimax for Arsenal. Having led the 2022/2023 Premier League standings until they were 5 points away from defending champions Manchester City, Arsenal had to lose the title in the last weeks of the Premier League.
The certainty of the title for Manchester City was determined after the Gunners were beaten by host Nottingham Forest 1-0 in Saturday’s match (21/5/2023). Arsenal’s failure to become a champion at the same time extended their fasting for the Premier League title since they last won it in the 2003/2004 season.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has claimed responsibility for Arsenal’s failures this season. He apologized to the Gooners, nicknamed Arsenal supporters.
“I’m sorry. I’m sure we could have done it (won the title), but the team didn’t do it and that is my responsibility,” Arteta told BBC.
After finishing fifth last season, Arsenal exceeded expectations by challenging for the title and have remained at the top of the table for so long. Unfortunately, the Gunners conceded 16 goals in eight games which ultimately cost them the title.
“When you come in April and May you need 24 players ready to play. For various reasons we didn’t have that,” Arteta said, alluding to the lack of quality squad depth that contributed to Arsenal’s failure to win the title.
Arsenal led for 248 days throughout the 2022/2023 season, becoming the longest team leading the standings without winning a title in Premier League history.
“I can’t think about it now. We have to congratulate City. We have learned a lot of lessons. We have changed a lot at this club. We have made big steps, but the highlight was to win the championship and we fell short,” said the 41-year-old manager That.
“This is football. It’s a very sad day. We have competed, but not enough to be champions. Now we have to recover. It hurts a lot. I have to find a way to lift the players and we have a tough week ahead of us ,” Arteta said.
Meanwhile, Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale admitted that the players were also responsible for the failure of the North London team to win the title, which was actually in sight.
“We had a few games where we dropped points through individual errors. Those three or four games were mistakes. We are very disappointed with what happened, but we are proud to have pushed hard,” said the 25-year-old keeper.
