Ilya Lichtenstein, the mind behind the hacker attack on Bitfinex in 2016finally broke his silence. For the first time since he was arrested in 2022, the Bitfinex hacker decided to speak about the attack and also his conviction.
In a five-minute video posted to his X account, Lichtenstein took full responsibility for the attack and said he acted alone. Many people saw this as an attempt to free Heather Morgan, his wife. The influencer received an 18-month prison sentence for her participation in the case.
However, Lichtenstein apparently wanted to end rumors involving his father’s alleged participation in the case. This happened after the launch of a Netflix documentary about the case, which places his father as an accomplice. Ilya rejected the statement and reiterated that only he participated in the case.
At the same time, he published the hashtag #FreeRazzlekhan on X. Razzlekhan is the pseudonym that Morgan used when recording her videos as an influencer.

During his 5-minute video, Lichtenstein once again emphasized that he was the only one to blame for the crime. He rejected the Netflix documentary hints that his father was involved in action. Furthermore, he denied that the robbery had any connection with a Russian spy agency.
In addition to denying the speculation, Lichtenstein also said that I was sorry and described what he would do after serving his prison sentence. Interestingly, the hacker claimed that intends to work in the cybersecurity industryand he has already helped US authorities dismantle other scams.
Unlike Heather Morgan, who got a lighter sentence, Lichtenstein received a five-year sentence of prison. As the sentence began to run from 2022, he should be released from prison at some point in 2027.
In 2016, Lichtenstein diverted 119,754 Bitcoins (BTC) from Bitfinexwhich were equivalent to around US$71 million. But with the appreciation of BTC, this total corresponds to more than US$10 billion at current prices.
Along with the couple’s arrest, United States authorities seized the stolen BTC. And Ilya discussed the process of returning the funds stolen from the exchange in his video. The hacker said that over the past three years, worked to account for and return all assets required by confession.
One restitution hearing will be in Februarywhich will determine whether the money went back to Bitfinex or directly to its users. For now, these BTC are in wallets under the control of the US Department of Justice.
