BlackRock’s cryptocurrency portfolio draws attention for mixing valuable cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, even memecoins, stablecoins, artificial intelligence (AI) tokens, decentralized science (DeSci) and decentralized finance (DeFi). With a total of US$11.5 billion in investments, the manager stood out especially with its Bitcoin ETF, IBIT, which in 2024 reached a record volume of US$53.57 billion in just one year.
Recently, data on the cryptocurrency investment portfolio of BlackRock, the largest fund manager in the world, was released. With US$11.5 billion in investments, the United States company was one of the highlights of the cryptocurrency market in 2024. This is because its Bitcoin ETF, IBIT, reached volume of $50 billion in one year ($53.57 billion to be exact). With this, the manager broke a record held by another ETF, also from BlackRock, which had reached the US$50 billion mark in 5 years.
The achievement was celebrated by the cryptocurrency market and raised questions about what other cryptocurrency investments the manager has. In addition to the Bitcoin ETF, BlackRock also has an Ethereum ETF, launched in the middle of last year. However, despite these two assets representing around 99% of the company’s cryptocurrency portfolio, BlackRock also has investments in other cryptocurrencies.
According to data provided by Arkham Intel, a platform specialized in collecting data on cryptocurrencies, BlackRock holds a total of 154 different types of cryptocurrencies. More than US$57 billion has been invested, much of it in Bitcoin and Ethereum, but the list includes altcoins, AI tokens, DeSci, DeFi, memecoins and others.
Top cryptocurrencies by unit price
We separate cryptocurrencies into three categories, from the most valuable, to those with the highest market capitalization, and to the cryptocurrencies in the portfolio in terms of numerical volume.
Among the most valuable cryptocurrencies in BalckRock’s portfolio, we find the classic Bitcoin and Ethereumfirst and second cryptocurrency in terms of market capitalization, respectively. However, the portfolio also holds the Binance (BNB) and decentralized science tokens (DeSci) HAIR and VITA-FAST and FXSamong the five most valuable.
In terms of the volume of money invested in cryptocurrencies, the scenario changes a little, but not much. Numbers 1 and 2 on the list continue to be the Bitcoin and Ethereumas it could not be otherwise given that the manager trades ETF shares of both tokens. However, thirdly, the USDC stablecoin attracts attention, in addition to COLLE token, from the AI category and SPX, a memecoin from the Ethereum ecosystem which has already appreciated 11,000% in one year.
Now, in numerical terms of quantity, the list of cryptocurrencies in BlackRock’s portfolio changes completely. These are tokens memecoin projects that cost fractions of a cent and are therefore purchased in large quantities. Even so, it is noteworthy that the manager chose these tokens to integrate its portfolio. Highlight is the more than 9 trillion tokens of the Ushiba memecoin, launched in 2021.
