The Peaq blockchain, a blockchain platform that stands out in the field of decentralized physical infrastructure networks (DePIN), announced the integration of the QUAKECore project. The aim of the project is to develop a global earthquake warning system and mitigate the devastation caused by increasingly frequent natural disasters. The idea is to develop a community platform where users can share data about earthquakes and receive rewards (‘proof of contribution’).
One of the project’s creators, Ruediger Strackparticipated in a conversation circle at X Space (listen on full here) and highlighted that the QUAKECore alert system was designed to be affordable and efficient. When a tremor is detected, the device – similar to fire alarms – sounds an alarm, giving users about 20 seconds to evacuate..
Strack highlighted the importance of these seconds, which despite seeming small, significantly increases the survival rate. With eight devices installed at the eight points of a hexagon-shaped coverage area, it is possible to check the origin of an earthquake and where it should progress.
Peaq’s blockchain technology will be essential in providing the stability and scalability needed to store, analyze and process the data generated by QUAKECore. Leveraging Peaq as its layer-1 blockchain, QUAKECore will connect its natural disaster detection decentralized physical infrastructure (DePIN) system to Peaq’s machine economy.
Blockchain saving lives
As part of this integration, all devices on the network will be equipped with self-sovereign IDs, utilizing Peaq’s data verification feature to ensure the authenticity of information. Furthermore, the QUAKECore will implement a mechanism that will allow devices to store hashes — cryptographic signatures — of the data collected directly in Peaq, while the raw data will be stored outside the blockchain, providing greater security for the operation.
One Decentralized reward distribution system will also be set up, promoting active community participation. To complete this integration, QUAKECore will natively launch its token on Peaq, creating a robust ecosystem that encourages collaboration and innovation in natural disaster prevention.
One of the great advantages of QUAKECore is the significant reduction in installation and maintenance costs compared to traditional seismic stations. For example, in the Czech Republic (Strack’s home country), only 610 devices will be needed to cover the country’s 78,866 km².
In addition to benefiting individual users, QUAKECore also aims to serve diverse industries such as construction, mining, insurance and telecommunications by sharing real-time earthquake data. The collected data can be stored and traded securely through Peaq’s blockchain technology, creating a sustainable data trading ecosystem that can benefit both ends of the chain.
THE QUAKECore is currently in pre-order, expected to launch in the first quarter of 2025. Strack emphasized that this project not only prepares for earthquakes, but can also be adapted for other natural disasters, bringing a new way for societies to deal with emergencies.
