CAS Processing His Penalty, Darwin Nunez Can Strengthen the Uruguayan National Team
Montevideo, Beritasatu.com – Striker Darwin Nunez, who has just served two of his five playing bans, can return to strengthen the Uruguayan national team in the World Cup qualifiers which will be held this October. Liverpool’s number 9 was previously banned from playing for Uruguay for five matches due to his involvement in clashes with spectators after the Copa America semi-final between Uruguay and Colombia in July 2024.
Apart from the suspension, Nunez was also given a fine of US$ 20,000. After that he missed playing for Uruguay against Paraguay and Venezuela from the 2026 World Cup qualifiers last month. He is not expected to be available until November’s second match against Brazil.
However, the 25-year-old has been cleared to feature against Peru (12 October) and Ecuador (16 October) this month after his appeal was upheld by the High Court of Arbitration (CAS).
The Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) submitted the case to CAS after the Conmebol Court of Appeal decided not to reduce sanctions against players involved in the Copa America match.
This means that Nunez is free to play while the disciplinary process is ongoing. Thus, if there is no decision from CAS by November, then Nunez can play.
According to El Observadorif the court finds the five-match ban satisfactory, he will serve the remaining three matches of his sanction. However, AUF is optimistic that the sanctions will be reduced and Nunez will only miss one more match.
