This Monday, November 4th, the president of the Central Bank of Brazil, Roberto Campos Neto, announced an innovative advance that promises to further revolutionize the country’s instant payments system: Pix offline.
During the Pix contactless launch event at Google’s headquarters in São Paulo, Campos Neto detailed how this new technology works, which will allow payments via NFC (Near Field Communication) even without an internet connection.
The Central Bank had already been working on two different models for this function. In the first, the payment recipient uses NFC technology in a digital wallet, integrated with the open finance system and Pix through a Payment Service Provider (PSP).
This model, presented in partnership with Google, enables a fast and secure transaction with the internet. The second model, ideal for offline transactions, will allow the payer to send the amount via NFC even if the recipient is disconnected, facilitating payments in places with low or no connectivity.

This innovation is part of a broader package of improvements to Pix, which include security and practicality. Campos Neto highlighted that the Central Bank is working to improve the tracking, blocking and return of amounts via Pix, ensuring greater security for users.
“This announcement will be made soon and is part of a set of measures to strengthen security in operations, of which we have already disclosed part”, revealed Campos Neto.
The continuity of this innovation movement is also guaranteed. With the future management of Gabriel Galípolo at the head of the Central Bank, the institution will maintain its commitment to the development of financial technologies, including Pix, Open Finance and Drex, Real Digital.
Campos Neto highlighted that Galípolo will continue the innovation agenda, integrating new ideas and solutions into the Brazilian financial system.
“We are experiencing a convergence of technological advances that include Pix, Drex and Open Finance. These steps are already underway and should remain a fundamental part of the Central Bank. I have full confidence that Gabriel Galípolo will bring a modern vision, but without interrupting the flow of innovation that we have already consolidated”, commented Campos Neto.
The BC president also emphasized the importance of collaboration between managers to maintain the innovative essence of the Central Bank.
