Christine-Cindy, Mother-Daughter Duet in Women’s Doubles Table Tennis at PON XXI

Medan, Todaysgist.com – The women’s table tennis doubles from East Java, Christine Ferliana and Cindy Marcella Putri, are a mother-daughter duo at the 21st Aceh-North Sumatra National Sports Week (PON) 2024.

Christine is a senior table tennis athlete. The 42-year-old athlete duets with her eldest daughter, Cindy, who is 20 years old.

“This PON is the second competition. Previously, it was at the national championship yesterday,” said Christine in Medan, Monday (16/9/2024).

According to Christine, the national championship is a national competition held after the XXI PON qualifying round.

For Cindy, PON XXI is the first time. For Christine, PON Aceh-Sumut is the sixth PON.

“It’s also nice to be able to partner with your own mother, especially since this is your first PON, right,” said Cindy.

According to Cindy, pairing with her own mother in women’s doubles certainly gives her an advantage. “My mother has experience in PON, so she can guide me at the beginning of PON. So especially there is more guidance,” she said.

Christine often scolds Cindy during matches so that they both show their best performance.

“Often. More fussy, because we want the best results. More fussy, of course,” said the mother.

The mother-daughter duo won 3-0 in the last 16 of PON XXI against Lampung women’s doubles Yosi Dewantari and Huliatul Asyiroh Mughni.

However, the women’s doubles effort of Christine-Cindy failed in the quarter-finals of PON XXI when they played against the pair from Bali, Devi Yanti Nurrahman and Ni Ketut Devinta Maharani.

Christine-Cindy lost dramatically in a five-set match, which ended with a 10-10 draw in the final set. The Balinese pair won 12-10 in the end.

Previously, Christine and Cindy were on the same team in the women’s team event, along with other East Java athletes, namely Siti Aminah and Dwi Oktaviani Sugiarto. The mother-daughter athlete pair won silver and climbed the podium together in the women’s team event.

Christine is a table tennis athlete who has participated in the SEA Games many times. She collected 11 SEA Games medals with two silver and nine bronze from 1999 to 2011. She played in women’s singles and doubles.

Last time, Christine won a gold medal at the 2016 PON in West Java in the women’s singles.
