Changpeng Zhao, known as CZ, former CEO of Binance, made a public appeal for the giant Amazon to start accepting Bitcoin as a means of payment.
The proposal, published on his account on the social network X, generated extensive discussion about the functionality and benefits of the company’s adoption of cryptocurrency.
In his post, CZ got straight to the point: “Simple. Accept payments in Bitcoin.”
The idea, according to him, goes beyond the usefulness of currency as a means of transaction. He believes this would be the most practical way for companies like Amazon to accumulate Bitcoin in their treasuries, strengthening your financial position with an asset considered solid in the long term.
Bitcoin as payment
The reaction from users on the platform was not long in coming. Some criticized CZ’s proposal, such as one user who stated: “Why Bitcoin? It’s a bad payment method. I agree with cryptocurrencies, but not BTC for this.”
The comment reflects a common view that Bitcoin, due to its longer confirmation times, would be unsuitable for fast transactions. CZ, however, partially acknowledged this criticism, pointing out that despite the delay, the experience of using Bitcoin still surpasses traditional banks.
He shared a personal example: “I paid $17 in Bitcoin yesterday. I waited 15 minutes, But I didn’t have to call anyone. It just worked.”
Additionally, the conversation highlighted solutions that could make Bitcoin more efficient, such as the Lightning Network. This second-layer technology allows for near-instant transactions, resolving much of the criticism of Bitcoin’s confirmation time.
Several participants in the discussion praised LN’s potential to scale the use of cryptocurrency in everyday transactions.
CZ emphasized that his proposal to Amazon is not intended to replace faster or more popular payment systems, but rather to offer the company an opportunity to accumulate an asset with unique properties, such as the ability to preserve and increase value over time.
