Changpeng Zhao (CZ), the former CEO of Binance, will be released from prison on September 29 after serving a four-month sentence at a low-security facility in Santa Barbara County, California. The confirmation comes from the official website of the United States Federal Bureau of Prisons, thus ending a turbulent period for one of the most iconic figures in the cryptocurrency world.

CZ is known for his leadership at Binance, one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in the world. He turned himself in to court in May 2024, after being convicted in April on charges of facilitating money laundering through his platform.

Although federal prosecutors had suggested a three-year sentence, and sentencing guidelines called for a 12- to 18-month term, the judge was more lenient and handed down a sentence of just four months in prison. That decision included his transfer to a halfway house, a facility designed to prepare ex-convicts for reintegration into society.

As his release date approaches, speculation is mounting about what CZ’s next move will be. While Binance is out of his plans — as the U.S. Department of Justice has banned him from leading the exchange — many believe he could re-enter the crypto market in another capacity.
