Decentraland, one of the leading virtual reality platforms in the cryptocurrency space, had its official X (formerly Twitter) account compromised on September 19. According to a warning from blockchain security firm PeckShield, attackers are using the account to spread a phishing link disguised as an airdrop of MANA tokens. The goal is to trick the platform’s followers.

The scam works by directing users to a fraudulent website where they are instructed to connect their digital wallets to claim the supposed airdrop. However, upon doing so, victims have their funds stolen. PeckShield has advised users not to interact with the content of their Decentraland account until the security issue is resolved.

This type of attack, involving the compromise of social media accounts for cryptocurrency scams, has become increasingly common. On September 18, scammers hacked several prominent social media accounts to use similar methods to steal cryptocurrency.

In the case of Decentraland, the fake ads began circulating on the evening of September 18, with a post about a MANA airdrop being distributed to the community. To make the scam more convincing, the criminals added comments explaining that they had disabled replies due to “malicious links.”

Decentraland users targeted in attack

The account’s last legitimate post before the scam occurred around 22:00 UTC on September 18, highlighting fashion choices from the platform’s community. After that post, all interactions became related to the fake airdrop scam.

Security experts recommend that users carefully analyze information before taking any action in situations like this. Kitboga, known for his strategies to thwart scammers, recently shared some tips.

He explained that a common tactic among scammers is to create a sense of urgency. He advised people to resist this pressure and make decisions cautiously to avoid falling into traps.

PeckShield has advised Decentraland followers to wait for further communications from the platform, which should confirm when the security of the X account has been restored. Until then, it is essential that users remain vigilant and avoid clicking on suspicious links or providing sensitive information without verifying the veracity of the sources.

Despite the attack, the price of the MANA token has risen 6.2% in the past 24 hours, according to data from CoinGecko. At the time of writing, the cryptocurrency is trading at $0.28.
