Defeating Thailand 1-0, Indonesia Wins AFF U-19 Cup for the Second Time

Surabaya, Todaysgist.com – The Indonesian U-19 National Team won the AFF U-19 Cup title for the second time after defeating Thailand 1-0 in the final, Monday (29/7/2024), at the Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium, Surabaya.

The goal that brought Indonesia victory was scored by Jens Raven in the 17th minute. He connected Kadek Arel’s header with his foot and broke through Thailand’s goal.

This is Indonesia’s second title in this tournament after also becoming champions in 2013. Uniquely, at that time Indonesia also became champions under the guidance of coach Indra Sjafri. In the final match of the AFF U-19 Cup, Indonesia defeated Vietnam through a penalty shootout.

While this defeat has failed Thailand’s ambition to become the only team with the most AFF U-19 Cup titles. They currently hold the same number of titles as Australia, which is five times.

Indonesia advanced to the final match of the 2024 AFF U-19 Cup, after defeating Malaysia 1-0 thanks to a goal by Muhammad Alfarezzi Buffon. Meanwhile, Thailand appeared in the final after defeating Australia 1-0 through an own goal by Dylan Leonard in the 13th minute.

Indonesia started the match by trying to attack Thailand’s defense. However, the Thai players were able to dampen the host’s attacks.

In the 13th minute, Indonesia had a chance. Jens Raven managed to break into the opponent’s penalty box. However, the Dutch-born player’s shot was blocked by the opponent.

Moments later, Thailand had a chance. Thanawut Phochai managed to get into the Indonesian penalty box and fired a shot. His effort failed to produce a goal as the ball hit the goalpost.

The Indonesian U-19 national team won 1-0 over Thailand thanks to a goal from Jens Raven. The goal was scored by the Dutch-born striker in the 17th minute. The goal came from a corner kick sent by Kafiatur Rizky from a corner kick.

Kafek Arel met the corner kick with a header. The ball was then connected by Raven who put the ball into the goal with his foot. Indonesia took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute.

In the 43rd minute, Thanawut managed to penetrate the Indonesian defense from the left side of the defense. He then released a kick. Luckily for Indonesia, the ball was right in the arms of goalkeeper Ikram.

Indonesia also got a chance in the 45th minute. Toni Firmansyah executed a free kick from outside the penalty box. However, his kick was well caught by goalkeeper Kittipong Bunmak. The score of 1-0 for Indonesia lasted until the first half ended.

Entering the second half, Indra Sjafri brought in Figo Dennis to replace Welber Jardim who was injured in the 53rd minute.

Thailand then had a chance after one of their players fired a shot at goal. However, their effort failed to produce a goal because the ball was caught by Ikram Algiffari.

In the 76th minute, Jens Raven had another chance. He managed to break into the opponent’s penalty box. However, he slipped while controlling the ball.

Indonesia then made three changes at once. Coach Indra Sjafri brought in Arkhan Kaka, Meshaal Hamzah, and Mufdi Iskandar. They replaced Jens Raven, Mufli, and Riski Afrisal respectively.

Thailand continued to try to build attacks to break down Indonesia’s defense. However, their efforts always failed in the back line.

Thailand threatened Indonesia’s goal when Thanakrit Chongmuangpak took a free kick in the 78th minute. Luckily, the ball was blocked by the Indonesian defense.

Entering the last five minutes of the match, Thailand continued to try to close down Indonesia’s defense. A chance was obtained by player number 19 Paripan Wongsa in the 85th minute. He fired a shot right into Indonesia’s goal. Luckily, goalkeeper Ikram Algiffari managed to secure the ball.

The score of 1-0 for Indonesia’s advantage lasted until the match ended. Indonesia became the champion of the 2024 AFF U-19 Cup.
