The European parliamentarian Sarah Knafo asked that the European Union create one Bitcoin strategic reservewhile rejecting the advance of the digital euro, the digital currency issued by European Central Bank (ECB).
The declaration, made in a speech to the European Parliament, marks a firm stance against proposals for a CBDC (central bank digital currency) and in favor of adopting Bitcoin as a strategic asset.
The French parliamentarian criticized what she called the ECB’s “totalitarian temptations” and defended a change in Europe’s economic model. Knafo also highlighted that Bitcoin offers a decentralized alternative to protect the European population against inflation and the inappropriate economic decisions of governments.
Furthermore, she compared the European context with that of other countries, such as El Salvadorwhich adopted Bitcoin as its official currency in 2021, and with the new agenda crypto-friendly of the government of United States under the leadership of Donald Trump.
Yes to Bitcoin and rejection of the digital euro
In her speech, the parliamentarian also mentioned the president of Federal Reserve, Jerome Powellwho recently described Bitcoin as “digital gold”. Therefore, for Knafo, Europe needs to stop focusing only on regulation and taxation and should begin to promote innovation with digital assets.
The parliamentarian harshly criticized the digital euro, stating that the initiative could threaten the financial freedom of Europeans.
The ECB is studying the concept of a digital euro since 2020 and intends to make a final decision on its launch by October 2025. However, the project faces resistance, mainly due to concerns about the user privacy and with possible negative impacts on private payment companies.
Sarah Knafo believes that betting on Bitcoin is betting on freedom and economic security. She highlighted that the asset offers a reliable alternative to the uncertainties of European monetary policies.
The request to create a strategic reserve with Bitcoin comes at a critical time, when European authorities face difficulties in balancing innovation and regulation in the financial sector.
