President-elect Donald Trump is moving the political scene in the United States by putting together a government team with a favorable stance on the cryptocurrency market.
According to information from the Washington Post, Trump is already evaluating a list of pro-Bitcoin candidates to occupy strategic positions in his cabinet. Trump’s intention is to promote a more permissive regulatory environment for the sector, thus fulfilling his promise to transform the United States into the “crypto capital of the planet”.
The appointments of figures known for their pro-cryptocurrencies positions could represent a shift in the country’s regulatory scenario. Sources indicate that Trump’s team of advisors has been holding talks with ecosystem executives, including representatives from companies like Ripple and Coinbase.
This alignment suggests a government more open to innovations in the sector, in contrast to the Biden administration, which faced criticism for decisions contrary to the development of digital assets.
Cryptocurrencies
Among the most important positions for cryptocurrency policy is the presidency of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), currently held by Gary Gensler.
Gensler’s rigid stance towards the sector generated a lot of criticism and, according to the Washington Post, Trump is already considering names to replace him. The list of possible nominees includes Paul Atkins, former SEC commissioner and participant in Trump’s first government transition, and Chris Giancarlo, former commissioner of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), known for his support for blockchain development.
Other names under consideration include Hester Peirce and Mark Uyeda, SEC commissioners, both Republicans and with a history of supporting the crypto sector. Peirce, known as “Crypto Mom” by the cryptocurrency community, stood out for defending the creation of a regulatory environment that encourages innovation, which could align with Trump’s plans.
In addition to the SEC, the Treasury Department is also on the change radar. Janet Yellen, current secretary, has expressed an openly opposing view of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.
As a replacement, billionaire Scott Bessent emerges as the favorite, being a supporter of Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies in general. Another name being considered is John Paulson, although his position in the sector is less favorable. These possible appointments signal a new approach at the Treasury, with greater openness to the crypto market and the possibility of boosting the sector.
Trump’s decisions regarding the sector come at a time of historic highs for Bitcoin, which recently surpassed the US$89,000 mark, reflecting the impact of expectations from a pro-crypto government.
