Donald Trump Wants to Pay US Debt Using Crypto
Last week, Donald Trump became the first major party candidate to speak at the Bitcoin Conference in Nashville. He joined Robert F. Kennedy, who first spoke at the conference last year in Miami and will return as a speaker in 2024.
Reported from Yahoo Finance, Friday (2/8/2024), after his speech at the conference, Donald Trump held a fundraiser where he reportedly raised USD 21 million or the equivalent of IDR 341.1 billion (assuming an exchange rate of IDR 16,261 per US dollar).
He has also been selling tickets for a private meeting for $800,000 each. His speech represents a shift from his previous stance on crypto. He promised that under his administration, the US would not sell its bitcoin reserves.
Bitcoin and crypto enthusiasts are also encouraged by the fact that his vice presidential candidate, JD Vance, has publicly revealed ownership of at least USD 100,000 in bitcoin in 2022.
Trump announced in May his campaign would begin accepting crypto donations, and has raised $4 million through digital assets, a small percentage of the more than $200 million he has raised.
Trump isn’t the only presidential candidate to support bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Ahead of the Bitcoin Conference, reports emerged that Kamala Harris was also interested in speaking at the event.
His campaign aides and top Democrats have also reportedly met with industry leaders to try and reset relations between the Democratic party and the industry.
