El Salvador’s president, Nayib Bukele, is planning a bold initiative for 2025: installing a Bitcoin node in every home of the country.
The idea, presented by Max Keiser, Bukele’s consultant and Bitcoin supporter, aims to transform the country into a model of Decentralized nation-state.
A node is a computer connected to a network that shares information and follows consensus rules. In the Bitcoin ecosystem, full nodes are fundamental to ensure network decentralization and securityas they verify transactions and maintain protocol rules.

Technological challenges to running Bitcoin nodes
To make the project viable, every Salvadoran home would need an adequate technological infrastructure, including stable internet access and an effective training process.
According to the 2024 census, the country has almost 2 million homes, which would significantly increase the number of nodes on the Bitcoin network. Currently, the network has around 99,380 active nodesaccording to data from Luke Dashjr, Bitcoin Core contributor.
The expansion of nodes is part of a larger plan to bitcoinization of the country. Keiser also suggested using national bonuses to acquire more Bitcoin, as well as the idea of tokenize El Salvador’s gold reserves.
Since 2021, the government has accumulated almost 6,000 BTCconsolidating the country as a hub for investors interested in cryptocurrencies. While El Salvador moves forward with its plans to adopt Bitcoin on a large scale, the United States faces legal barriers to creating a strategic reserve of BTC.
According to Jerome Powell, president of the Federal Reserve, current restrictions make initiatives in this direction difficult. For Keizer, this reinforces the position of El Salvador as a preferred destination for Bitcoin investors.
