Ethereum developers have decided to take a phased approach to implementing the long-awaited “Pectra” upgrade. The group made the announcement during the latest Consensus Layer Meeting, held on September 19. The decision aims to reduce the complexity of releasing such a large upgrade in a single move, reducing the risk of bugs and technical issues.

Initially planned as one of the most ambitious hard forks on the network, the Pectra upgrade will now occur in two major phases. The first phase is expected to take place in early 2025 and will focus on fundamental changes. Meanwhile, the second phase will bring more complex upgrades.

In the first phase of the update, eight Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) will be implemented, with EIP-7702 being one of the most anticipated. This proposal aims to improve the experience of digital wallet users, making their use simpler and more efficient.

Other major changes will focus on increasing the efficiency of the Ethereum network and improving the user interface. The decision to adopt a narrower scope for this initial phase is intended to ensure that the implementation process is more manageable, minimizing delays and technical issues that could impact the day-to-day operations of the network.

The developers prioritized these improvements to address critical areas of the Ethereum ecosystem, while leaving room for deeper advancements in phase two.

The second phase of the Pectra upgrade is still in development. However, this stage promises to bring significant improvements to the Ethereum network infrastructure. Possible improvements include updates to the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) and the introduction of PeerDAS, a feature designed to improve data availability sampling.

PeerDAS will be crucial to supporting Layer-2 blockchains, which rely on the Ethereum network for increased scalability and functionality. These blockchains, known for increasing the efficiency of the mainnet, will be able to benefit from the new technology once implementation takes place.

The decision to split the upgrade into two phases will allow developers to prioritize the most critical changes while dedicating more time and testing to the more complex upgrades, ensuring that Ethereum continues to innovate without compromising the stability of the network.

This phased approach promises to accelerate the pace of Ethereum’s evolution while maintaining the platform’s hallmark security and reliability.
