European Commission Summons Meta: Allegations of Negligence in Protecting Minors from Social Media Addiction

On the other hand, Meta has been called out many times by the European Union regarding misinformation and fake news. Most recently, the European Union is conducting a thorough investigation into Meta for its alleged failure to remove election disinformation.

Although the European Commission's statement did not explicitly mention Russia, Meta confirmed that the investigation targets the country's Doppelganger campaign, an online disinformation operation pushing pro-Kremlin propaganda.

Bloomberg sources also said the investigation was focused on Russian disinformation operations, and described it as a series of “efforts to imitate the appearance of traditional news sources while producing content that supports the policies of Russian President Vladimir Putin.”

Quote EngadgetThursday (2/5/2024), this investigation was carried out a day after France said 27 of the 29 European Union member states had been targeted by pro-Russian online propaganda ahead of the European parliament elections in June 2024 (2024 elections).
