Facing Data Surveillance Issues, Worldcoin Agrees to Temporarily Stop Services in Spain

Launch News.bitcoin.comSaturday (8/6/2024) Spanish data privacy watchdog AEPD revealed that it had signed an agreement with Tools For Humanity, the company behind the Worldcoin biometric iris scanning protocol, urging the company to temporarily stop its operations in the country.

The agreement comes after a warning action was taken ordering Worldcoin to suspend its activities in Spain for three months.

In its statement, AEPD said that it did not have enough information regarding the treatment of data the company collected from Spanish citizens.

The agency also highlighted the alleged inclusion of minors in data collection and how users cannot withdraw the information collected.

Meanwhile, Worldcoin has filed an appeal before the National Session, a high-level court in Spain.

Worldcoin argued that AEPD does not have jurisdiction over it, considering that the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) stipulates that data protection agencies can intervene.

In the case of Worldcoin, this is the Bavarian State Data Protection Supervision Office (BayLDA).

However, the National Assembly upheld this measure, concluding that safeguarding the protection of Spanish citizens' biometric data is above protecting the economic interests of companies.

The new agreement stipulates that data collection operations will be suspended for one year, or until an investigation organized by BayLDA is completed.

Nonetheless, in its press release, AEPD acknowledged that since the first precautionary measures were taken, Worldcoin has introduced new functionalities, including age restrictions and the possibility of removing iris information for protocol users.
