FBI Warns of Scammers Disguising themselves as Crypto Exchanges
Todaysgist.com, Jakarta – The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has issued a warning about scammers pretending to be affiliated with crypto exchanges to steal users’ funds.
According to the FBI, the scammers contact their targets via phone or text and introduce themselves as employees of a crypto exchange. They will claim that there is a problem with the user’s account or that someone is trying to hack their account.
Criminals often try to surprise their potential victims and tell them that they need to act immediately to protect their accounts. At this point, the scammer will try to get the user to provide an access code, click a link, or provide identifying information.
This would allow fraudsters to access users’ accounts and steal their digital assets. The FBI warns users not to respond to such calls or messages. The government is asking users to do this even if the call or message appears official.
“Hang up. Call the cryptocurrency exchange’s official phone number to verify if there is a problem. Do not use any phone number the caller provides,” the FBI said, as quoted by Cointelegraph, Saturday (3/8/2024).
Additionally, the FBI is asking users not to visit any websites or click on links sent by the caller. The agency said it would be better to navigate to a separate, legitimate exchange.
If the caller asks for login details, the FBI urges users not to provide the information and to avoid downloading files and attachments in the message.
