Blockchain researcher ZachXBT accused Serpent, former professional Fortnite player, of coordinating memecoin scams that allegedly embezzled more than US$3.5 million. He detailed these accusations in a “thread” that he published on his X account.
In tweets, the investigator linked the Australian to various scams involving hacked social media accounts and fraudulent meme cryptocurrency projects.
ZachXBT identified that wallets linked to Serpent were directly associated with scams involving memecoinswhich used hacked accounts on platforms such as X and Instagram. Among the hacked profiles would be prominent accounts, such as those of McDonald’s, Usher and Wiz Khalifa.
Furthermore, Serpent would have diverted part of the funds obtained from these scams for gambling at online casinos such as Roobet and Stake. The investigator tracked deposits and withdrawals from these wallets. Furthermore, he shared recordings where Serpentwhen displaying his screen on Discord, revealed addresses of his transactions.
Another point ZachXBT raised was Serpent’s involvement in the project ERRORdescribed as a “rug pull”. In this type of scam, the creators, surprisingly, steal investors’ funds and disappear, abandoning the project. THE project portfolio would be linked to accounts compromised in previous scams.
After the accusations became public, Serpent started deleting posts from his X account. This action increased suspicions. Subsequently, your account has been suspended.
Serpent presented himself as a blockchain security analyst and founder of the Sentinel system, aimed at mitigating threats. He even published guides to help users avoid phishing scams and fake airdrops.
In 2022, Serpent would still have warned about vulnerabilities in Google ads, according to the blockchain security company SlowMist.
Phishing scams and fraud involving cryptocurrencies remain a significant problem in the industry, resulting in substantial losses for users.
Last month, as reported by Todaysgist, authorities in Japan arrested 18 people suspected of involvement in a fraudulent scheme using the cryptocurrency Monero (XMR). The accused used stolen credit card data to make fraudulent purchases, mainly through the flea market app Mercari. In the same month, a hacker attack stole $35 million in fwDETH tokens.
