Former Madrid Defender’s Contract at Fluminense Terminated After Clash with Coach

Rio de Janeiro, Beritasatu.com – Former Real Madrid defender Marcelo had his contract terminated at his childhood club Fluminense two months earlier, Saturday (2/11/2024). The decision was taken a day after the left-back had an argument with coach Mano Menezes on the sidelines.

The Brazilian club said in a statement that the decision was based on mutual agreement.

“The institutional and emotional ties between Fluminense and Marcelo remain untouched,” Fluminense said.

However, Marcelo did not comment regarding the termination of the contract.

Last year, Marcelo won the Rio de Janeiro state championship and the Copa Libertadores with Fluminense.

Fluminense was his first professional club before joining Real Madrid at the end of 2006 when he was 18 years old. He won five Champions Leagues and six La Ligas with Madrid.

Menezes will actually play 36-year-old Marcelo as a substitute in the final minutes of the match against Gremio in the Brazilian League match.

However, the defender apparently defied the coach’s instructions, who decided to field striker John Kennedy instead.

Fluminense led 2-1 at the time, but Gremio scored from the penalty spot just before the final whistle to equalize at the Maracana Stadium.

“I was going to put Marcelo in at the time, but I heard one thing I didn’t like and I changed my mind,” Menezes said at a press conference.

Fluminense is in 12th position in the Brazilian League after 32 matches.
