French Swimmer Leon Marchand Sets Rare Record
Jakarta, Todaysgist.com – French swimmer Leon Marchand made history by becoming the first swimmer to win two individual gold medals in the same event since 1976, after winning the 200m butterfly and 200m breaststroke.
Marchand started the day brilliantly with victory in the 200m butterfly, beating current world record holder Kristof Milak with a come back outstanding.
Marchand trailed defending champion Kristof Milak of Hungary throughout the race, but managed to snatch first place in the final seconds to claim gold by setting a new Olympic record in the 200m butterfly.
According to AFP, her victory in the 200-meter butterfly made her the first French swimmer in history to win multiple individual gold medals at a single Olympics. Less than 50 minutes after receiving her medal, Marchand was back in the starting blocks for the 200-meter breaststroke.
The 22-year-old set another Olympic record with a time of 2:05.85 in the 200m breaststroke, winning her second gold of the day and her third of the 2024 Games.
No swimmer has ever won Olympic medals in the butterfly and breaststroke in a single event, a rare feat that the young Frenchman has finally achieved.
These two golds add to the collection of one gold that Marchand previously won in the 400-meter medley on Sunday (28/7/2024) without significant resistance from other competitors.
With a total of three gold medals, Marchand now joins American swimmer Torri Huske (1 gold, 2 silvers) as the only athletes to win three medals so far at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
