Google Pulls Gemini AI Ad from 2024 Olympics, Why?
Todaysgist.com, Jakarta – Google has decided to pull its Gemini AI ad from the 2024 Olympics, after receiving heavy criticism from many parties.
In the 60-second Gemini AI ad titled “Dear Sydney,” a father wants to write a fan letter on behalf of his daughter.
The letter was apparently addressed to the child’s Olympic idol, US track star Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone.
“My daughter has always been a runner, like me. I thought she would follow in my footsteps, but it turns out she idolizes someone else,” the man says in the Google ad.
“I’m good at writing words, but this letter has to be precise. So Gemini helped me write a letter about how the Sydney trip has inspired my daughter, and is ready to beat her world record one day,” the father said in the ad.
After entering the prompt, you can see how Google’s AI immediately creates a draft of the fan letter.
Although it doesn’t seem strange, many netizens criticized the ad for being misleading and not feeling personal.
Many people think that fan letters should come straight from the heart and describe how their idols inspire them in life.
Realizing that the Gemini AI ad at the 2024 Olympics was receiving harsh criticism, Google finally issued a statement.
Quoting The VergeMonday (5/8/2024), the search engine giant realized that their Gemini AI advertisement had received negative responses.
The company said the ad was not meant to imply Gemini could completely replace humans.
“The Gemini Olympics ad was meant to show how the AI app could provide a starting point, a thought starter, or an early draft for someone looking for ideas for their writing,” Google said.
