A hacker took advantage of a critical vulnerability in the Dogecoin network and caused the fall of 69% of your nodes assets. Andreas Kohl, co-founder of Bitcoin sidechain Sequentia, revealed that he carried out the attack using just one old laptop in El Salvador, demonstrating the seriousness of the problem.
Before the attack, data from Blockchair indicated that the Dogecoin had 647 active nodes. After exploiting the flaw, this number dropped to 315. Kohl explained that he used a vulnerability identified by researcher Tobias Ruck, known as “DogeReaper”to cause crashes in the nodes.
On December 4, an account on X called “Department Of DOGE Efficiency” had publicly disclosed the flaw. The vulnerability, compared to a “Death Note” from the famous Japanese series, allows anyone remotely take down Dogecoin nodes.
Just like in the manga’s plot, where writing a person’s name causes their death, the vulnerability “writes” to a node addressleading to a segmentation error and consequent stoppage.

In technical terms, the segmentation error occurs when a program tries to access a part of memory that it is not allowed to access. When this happens, the operating system terminates the program to prevent further damage, resulting in the node lock.
Experts from the “Department Of DOGE Efficiency” warned that the flaw allowed anyone, with malicious intent, to take down the entire Dogecoin network in moments.
According to the account, “if a malicious actor had found this flaw before us, they could have paralyzed the Dogecoin network for days, with no transactions or blocks.”
Despite the severity of the vulnerability, Coinbase rated its severity as low and rewarded Tobias Ruck with just $200 for his discovery. This situation raises questions about the security of blockchain-based networks and the need for greater agility in responding to critical threats.
To date, Dogecoin continues to face challenges in restoring normality to its nodes and ensuring user trust.
Meanwhile, the price of DOGE does not appear to have been shaken by the news. According to data from CoinGecko, memecoin registered an increase of 2.5% in the last 24 hours, costing US$0.41.
