A joint operation resulted in the arrest of a hacker who, using sophisticated cyber fraud with cryptocurrencies, stole R$14.7 million of a US cryptocurrency exchange operating in Brazil.

The action resulted from a partnership between the 2nd Public Prosecutor’s Office for Specialized Criminal Investigation of Rio de Janeiro and the Narcotics Repression Office (DRE) of the Federal Police. According to investigations, the criminal carried out more than 600 financial transactions involving cryptocurrencies, moving around R$190 million in just 10 hours.

According to a CNN report, released this Friday (20), investigations began after security agencies were notified by a exchange based in New York, which also operates in the Brazilian market. Neither the name of the hacker nor that of the exchange was reported.

Using a sophisticated cyber fraud scheme, criminals stole approximately R$14.7 million from the entity. According to an investigation led by the MPRJ, a hacker exploited a vulnerability in the exchange system and carried out more than 600 financial operations involving cryptocurrencies.

The MP investigators, members of the Security and Intelligence Coordination of the Public Ministry of the State of Rio de Janeiro (CSI/MPRJ), used a advanced blockchain tracking system. Through the system, they found that the criminal had moved around US$ 190 millions.

Without any justification for the significant volume of negotiations, the agents arrested the suspect, who was subject of an arrest warrant. In addition, the agents carried out three search and seizure orders.

Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro has become a reference in combating cybercrimes involving crypto assets. In May, the entity held the event “Cryptoassets and asset prosecution”.

The objective was to present the universe of cryptoactives and the relationship with asset prosecution in cases of fraud and money laundering. Among the speakers were names such as Alexandre Senra and Sauvei Lai, prosecutors specialized in combating crimes involving crypto assets.

Likewise, the Federal Police has been working on this front. Recently, the PF launched Operation Niflheim to dismantle three criminal groups involved in money laundering and sending currency abroad. The investigations, which began in September 2021, revealed that the groups used shell companies to hide the illicit origin of resources, mainly from drug trafficking and smuggling.

Over three years, investigations found that the group moved more than R$55 billion since the beginning of the investigation.
