One OpenSea data leak exposed more than 7 million user emails, including addresses of prominent figures in the cryptocurrency industry such as CZ, former CEO of Binance. The warning about new phishing scams was given by Slow Mist’s CIO, following the revelation that this data, compromised since 2022, could facilitate fraud and theft in the growing Web3 sphere.

Security expert 23dps disclosed on its networks that more than 7 million OpenSea emails had been made public. The CIO of Slow Mist, a firm specializing in blockchain security, warned users with compromised data to beware of new phishing scams. Although they have only become public now, the data leak occurred about 3 years ago.

At the time, an employee of the company Customer.io, hired by OpenSea to handle email communication with the platform’s customers, sent the email addresses to an unauthorized third party.

The case was reported by OpenSea itself, in an open letter published on social media in June 2022. The letter, signed by the head of security at the time, Cory Hardman, warned users about the risks of phishing scams that could arise from data leaks.

2022 leak

In this type of scam, criminals send fake emails with the aim of tricking the recipient into clicking on a malicious link and sharing sensitive data. In the context of cryptocurrencies, Criminals send fake emails to obtain data such as wallet addresses, making it easier to steal tokens.

From the leak of OpenSea customers’ email addresses, the practice of phishing becomes something routine in users’ lives. A follower of 23dps, and OpenSea customer, commented that he receives around 37 fake emails daily from criminals trying to impersonate the NFT market. Informing that until the disclosure made by the Slow Mist specialist, he did not know that his data on OpenSea had been stolen.

Phishing-related cryptocurrency thefts are a major concern in the digital security industry, especially in the new Web3. Only in the year 2024, Criminals stole more than $2.3 billion from victims in 760 reported incidentsaccording to CertiK’s “Web3 Security Report 2024″. An increase of 31.6% compared to the previous year. THE Phishing stood out as the attack vector that generated the most losses, approximately US$1.05 billion was stolen in 296 incidentshalf of the total value.
