Indonesian Chess Players Aim for Tickets to the World Cup in the Asia Zone 3.3 Chess Championship

– The prestigious Asia Zone 3.3 Chess Championships 2023 chess championship was officially opened by Expert Staff of the Ministry of Youth and Sport Dwijayanto Putera together with General Chairperson of the Indonesian Chess Association (PB) Percasi who is also President of Zone 3.3 Asia GM Utut Adianto at the Ballroom of Atlet Century Hotel Senayan, Jakarta, Friday (5/5/2023) evening.

“Not wanting to compete with the SEA Games, but a cycle from FIDE (World Chess Federation) to hold a World Cup qualification event this May. I hope that there will be Indonesian chess players who qualify despite the hard fight,” GM Utut said in his welcome speech.

Irene Kharisma, Medina Aulia and Susanto Megaranto are expected and prayed for to win tickets to qualify for the World Cup. Apart from being prestigious, this championship also provides a large prize of a total of 15,000 US dollars. The championship contested two men’s and one women’s tickets to appear at the World Cup in Azerbaijan.

Meanwhile, Expert Staff of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Dwijayanto Putera said that chess is a sport popular among Indonesians besides football. He is very honored to be among the world’s and Asia’s best chess players to appear in this championship.

“Mr. Menpora Dito Ariotedjo gives his highest appreciation to Mr. Utut who has never stopped advancing Indonesian chess. Just like Mr. Utut, I hope that Indonesian representatives can qualify for the World Cup,” said Dwijayanto.

The 2023 Asia Zone Chess World Championship Qualification Round, entitled Asia Zone 3.3 Chess Championship 2023 at the Century Hotel, started the first round on Saturday (6/5/2023) and will last up to nine rounds until it ends on May 13. From the list of participants, Mongolia and Vietnam appeared as full teams reinforced by three Grand Masters (GMs), while the Philippines included two Grand Masters, just as the host Indonesia also fielded two GMs in the men’s section.
