Kaspersky, a digital security company, has disclosed a new cryptocurrency scam that has been deceiving somewhat unscrupulous users.
In the blow, Criminals share a seed phrase from a cryptocurrency wallet containing thousands of dollars with others. Victims think they can take advantage of that restricted access. However, in reality, they end up being victims of an ingenious scam.
According to the company’s blog post, scammers are creating YouTube accounts, accessing videos about finances and commenting asking for help to transfer funds from their wallet to another wallet, sharing the seed phrase. However, that cry for help is actually bait for a scam.
For those unfamiliar with the term, the seed phrase is a code, made up of letters and numbers, which is used to regain access to a cryptocurrency wallet. Therefore, every beginner in the world of cryptocurrencies should know that the seed phrase must be kept under lock and key, on a digital drive that is difficult to access or even on a physical mediummaking life difficult for hackers.
Too much alms…
As the seed phrase allows anyone in possession of it to access a cryptocurrency wallet, the benevolent user ends up having access to the purported newbie’s wallet. When you enter your wallet, you will find a significant amount of cryptocurrencies.
In the case of the Kaspersky example, which put its security team to learn about the scam, the wallet had about $8,000 in USDT stablecoin.
At that moment, the visitor is faced with what we can call the Sphinx Dilemma. In the story “King Oedipus”, Oedipus comes across the Sphinx, a mythological creature who presents the enigma:
If he managed to decipher the riddle, Oedipus would free the city of Thebes from the terror imposed by the sphinx. At the same time, he would become the local hero, being crowned as king. However, if he failed to solve the riddle, he would be devoured by the sphinx, condemning him to a tragic fate and perpetuating the cycle of destruction that the creature brought upon the city.
As in the legend of Oedipus, the visitor, faced with a cryptocurrency wallet full of dollars, can decipher the riddle and escape the situation unharmed. Or, you may decide to transfer the funds from the wallet to your own wallet, robbing the supposed newbie. Users who choose the second path, that of theft, end up becoming victims.
This is because, To withdraw tokens from your wallet, you must pay a fee in TRX, the TRON network cryptocurrency. As the newbie’s wallet does not have the necessary TRX, the “smart” user makes a transfer of the amount from his account. However, TRX cryptocurrencies end up in another wallet, and never reach the destination wallet.
