Luhut: No need for BTS anymore because there is already Starlink, this is what observers say

Liputan6.com, Jakarta – The Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, said that with the inclusion of Starlink there is no longer a need for a Base Transceiver Station (BTS).

“If we look at yesterday, what are the names of BTS, now there is no need for BTS. Wong already has Starlink,” said Luhut during a discussion at the event entitled 'Fun Chat: Chatting with Patents with the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries', quoted from YouTube IDNTimesFriday (7/6/2024).

He even asked all telecommunications companies, both state-owned and private, to compete with Starlink.

BTS itself is a telecommunications infrastructure that facilitates wireless communication between communication devices and operator networks.

Public Policy Observer from Trisakti University, Trubus Rahardiansah, believes that Luhut's statement will make the investment made by Kominfo through BAKTI redundant.

“To provide telecommunications services in the 3T area, the government through Kominfo has poured trillions in funds to build the Palapa Ring: East Palapa Ring, Central Palapa Ring and West Palapa Ring. BAKTI Kominfo has also invested quite a fantastic investment to build the SATRIA satellite,” he said.

He added, if Luhut really diverted communications in 3T areas to use Starlink, the country would actually suffer losses.

“Investments made using Universal Service Obligation (USO) funds and the State Revenue and Expenditure Budget (APBN) will be in vain. In fact, this will open up the potential for much greater state losses,” explained Trubus.

Luhut's statement stating that the presence of Starlink would open up opportunities for telecommunications business players to be able to compete, was also considered by Trubus to be incorrect.

If Luhut wants telecommunications companies to be able to compete with global tech giants, the government should make the industry healthier first. Moreover, the majority of telecommunications companies in Indonesia are MSMEs,” he said.
