Malaysia Masters: Still Adapting to the Field, Gregoria Still Wins

– Even though she is still adapting to the field at the Axiata Arena, Kuala Lumpur, Indonesian women’s singles, Gregoria Mariska Tunjung still successfully advanced to the last 16 of the Malaysia Masters 2023, Wednesday (24/5/2023).

This Wonogiri-born badminton player successfully advanced to the next round after defeating Taiwan’s representative, Pai Yu Po. Gregoria, who is currently ranked 9th in the world, defeated Pai, 21-19, 21-12. Gregoria needed 36 minutes to get rid of the world number 20 player.

The 23-year-old singles woman admits that she is still adapting to the field in her inaugural match at the Malaysia Masters. “It’s my first game and I didn’t get to try main court. Yesterday was just practice at practice court so maybe earlier it felt like it was still adjusting to the field and shuttlecock especially in the first game. Moreover, it seems that there are a lot of unforced errors and discomfort,” said the 2023 Spain Masters champion as quoted from the PBSI release.

“But overall I’m grateful to be able to win the match, especially in the first game. I can control my emotions because I was annoyed too many balls that shouldn’t have gone dead instead error,” said Gregory.

In the round of 16, Thursday (25/5/2023), Gregoria will meet the winner between Sim Yu Jin from Korea and Belgian representative Lianne Tan.

“Tomorrow I don’t know the opponent because Sim Yu Jin has not played against Lianne Tan, so after this I want to try watching them,” said Gregoria again.

“I don’t want to be influenced by anything, I still want to show my best. Hopefully the results will be good,” said the 166 cm tall badminton player.
