After almost 12 years of legal fights, British James Howells missed the last chance to recover £600 million in Bitcoins (BTC). This Wednesday (08), a judge from the High Court of the United Kingdom rejected the request from Howells to recover a hard drive containing access to Bitcoin worth £600 million ($739 million).

The decision, handed down by Judge Andrew John Keyser KC, marks the end of a long legal battle between Howells and Newport City Council. Howells threw a hard drive with 8,000 BTC in the trash in 2013 and tried to recover the object after the strong appreciation of the cryptocurrency.

However, the court rejected the request to turn over the landfill, citing environmental concerns. Howells initially tried to make a deal, but later sued the Newport council. Unfortunately for the man, Judge Keyser’s decision definitively buries Howells’ chances of recovering his Bitcoins.

According to a BBC report, he accumulated around 8,000 Bitcoins on a hard drive in 2013. Shortly afterwards, Howells discarded the object while cleaning his house, but remembered him when BTC started to appreciate.

No Bitcoins

At first, the man tried to make a deal with the Newport council and even offered half the amount to the city in exchange for help in digging up the landfill. In response, the council stated that the measure could generate environmental damage in the area and repeatedly denied permission for Howells to search.

The board later stated that since the hard drive was already in the landfill, it became the property of the council based on UK waste disposal laws. At the last hearing, the councilors also reiterated that the environmental licenses did not allow the excavation of the landfill.

According to the BBC report, the Judge Keyser dismissed Howells’ lawsuitstating that there are no reasonable grounds for the request. The judge agreed with the city council’s opinion and rejected Howell’s request.

Howells estimated that lost BTC could be worth more than £1 billion ($1.2 billion) until 2026, and offered half the amount if the council would help him access the hard drive. But that was not enough to convince the counselors.

Newport City Council told the court that James Howell should not be allowed to use the landfill because it would be against the law. The landfill contains more than 1.4 million tons of waste and cannot be excavated under the current permit.

James Howells argued that the search would not involve the whole place, but rather an area that contained 100,000 tons of waste. According to the man, it was in this region that the hard drive was last found, back in 2017.
