Vitalik Buterin, the founder of Ethereum, made a donation of 88 ETH to the zoo who became famous because of the hippopotamus Moo Deng who inspired the creation of the memecoin MOODENG. The case became public this Thursday, the 26th, when the zoo’s profile on X shared a letter written by Vitalik Buterin on social media.
In the letter addressed to the director of Khao Kheow Open Zoo, the Ethereum founder expressed his sincere gratitude for the warm hospitality received during his visit. He praised the zoo’s commitment to animal welfare and educationhighlighting plans to improve the pygmy hippopotamus habitat.
Vitalik Buterin was in Thailand to participate in Devcon SEA in Bangkok. So, he took the opportunity to pay a visit to the zoo. According to the director of the establishment, part of the donated funds will be invested in improvements to the location.
Meanwhile, another part will go to creation of an exhibition center for pygmy hippos that gained fame on social media.
$MOODENG on the rise
Hippo Moo Deng lives at Khao Kheow Open Zoo, located in Si Racha, Thailand. Moo Deng, who was born on July 10, 2024, went viral on the internet because of his small size and his energy, far above other hippos.
The hippo’s success saw the zoo’s daily visits double in a short time. Furthermore, enthusiasts have created a fundraising campaign around the mammal. This success did not take long to reach memecoins sectoralways on the lookout for the most popular memes of the moment.
On September 18, users of Pump.fun, on the Solana network, created the $MOODENG, which rose to prominence in mid-November, reaching a market capitalization of $610 million. The cryptoactive reached an increase of more than 3000%. At the time of writing, memecoin is priced at $0.28, with a daily increase of just 0.2%.
However, a another memecoinof the same name (MOODENG), but created on the Ethereum network (founded by Buterin), shot up more than 50% in the last 24 hours to $0.000193.
