The Pump.fun platform, launched in January as a decentralized launchpad for memecoins on the Solana blockchain, is facing heavy criticism. This is because serious incidents have occurred during token promotion live broadcasts.
Since the introduction of live streaming functionality in August, reports of dangerous behavior, including threats of self-harm and violent acts, have raised significant concerns in the crypto community.
One of the most alarming broadcasts was highlighted by Beau, security manager for the Pudgy Penguins. He warned about a user threatening to hang himself if his token did not reach a desired market value.
“This is absolutely horrible and it needs to stop. Check if it is possible to help this person”, said Beau, asking for the immediate suspension of the live broadcast functionality.
Regulatory risks and debates on freedom of expression
Other reports include cases of threats of family violence, animal abuse, child abuse and people locking themselves in cages. These episodes raised debates about the platform’s responsibility to moderate content and the possibility of regulatory intervention.
Mikko Ohtamaa, co-founder of Trading Strategy, warned that a lack of moderation could lead to the platform being closed by authorities. According to Ohtamaa, the lack of control over transmitted content makes Pump.fun an easy target for politicians and regulatory bodies. After all, it reinforces the narrative that criminals use cryptocurrencies.
Despite criticism, some defend the decentralized nature of the platform and argue against censorship, suggesting that the community itself should self-regulate. Alon, one of the founders of Pump.fun, acknowledged the seriousness of the concerns and said there is active moderation on the site, including removing hundreds of inappropriate streams.
“While we defend freedom of expression, it is our responsibility to ensure that users are not exposed to content that is clearly dangerous or repulsive,” said Alon. He highlighted that the platform allows pornographic content. However, users can filter them in the settings.
Alon also admitted that Pump.fun’s moderation system is not perfect. However, he promised more transparency about the platform’s rules. Finally, he highlighted that the team of moderators and engineers works continuously to deal with the large number of new tokens, broadcasts and comments. Furthermore, he asked the community to help report projects that violate the guidelines.
After the criticism, the memecoin platform decided to disable the live broadcast function.
