Meta Forms Wearables Division Shaded by AR Hardware, Ready to Lay Off More Employees
Todaysgist.com, Jakarta – Meta CTO, Andrew Bosworth aka Boz announced a major restructuring of the company's hardware division, since changing its name to Reality Labs in 2020.
All teams at Reality Labs are now combined into two groups, the first called “Metaverse” — which now includes the Quest headset — and a new organization called “Wearable”.
Metaverse itself emphasizes the Quest headset line, Horizon which includes Meta's social media division, and related technologies.
The Wearable organization includes Meta hardware development efforts, one of which is smart glasses in collaboration with Meta and Ray-Ban.
This step shows that Meta's strategy is starting to evolve, by sharpening the focus on augmented reality (AR) and the Metaverse.
Quote Business Today, Thursday (20/6/2024), this restructuring also resulted in the layoff of a number of Meta employees. Even so, Meta did not want to reveal how many employees would be affected.
Sources who claim to be familiar with this issue indicate that employee termination/layoffs have had a relatively small impact on employees and have focused on leadership roles which have now become redundant because there are two organizational structures that are almost the same.
