MicroStrategy Inc is on its way to being included in the Nasdaq 100 Index. With this, the company’s shares will be part of the famous QQQ, ETF that replicates the index of shares linked to the technology sector.

According to an update from Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas, Moderna, the biotechnology company that became famous for developing vaccines against Covid-19, is at risk of leaving the Index. If this happens, MicroStrategy could see its shares enter the QQQ starting December 23.

In addition to the early Christmas present, MSTR’s entry into the index would open purchases of up to US$2 billion. As a result, the potential for the company’s shares to rise may increase, as well as the exposure of large investors to Bitcoin (BTC).

According to the update, the official list of companies that will leave and enter the Nasdaq 100 Index will be released on Friday (13). If MicroStrategy enters, its shares will begin trading 10 days later. However, Bloomberg Intelligence has already expressed confidence in MicroStrategy and other companies’ chances of joining the Nasdaq 100.

MicroStrategy’s entry into QQQ

In addition to the company led by Michael Saylor, he also projected a great chance for Palantir Technologies to make the inclusion.

The criteria for inclusion in the Nasdaq 100 Index is strict. Companies must have traded on the Nasdaq for at least two years and command a daily volume of 200,000 shares. The company must also present regular or punctual financial statements, among others.

MicroStrategy emerged in November 1989 to offer advanced software and cloud services. However, the company did not rise to prominence until August 2020, when adopted a treasury reserve strategy focused on Bitcoin. In 2024, the company accumulated earnings of US$500 million per day thanks to its BTC purchases.

MicroStrategy co-founder and president Michael Saylor has helped drive the company’s growth to date. In addition to keeping faith in the Bitcoin purchasing strategy, Saylor has taken on a public advocacy role for BTC.

Last week, Saylor presented a 3-minute speech to the Microsoft board with the aim of convincing the company to adopt cryptocurrency as a reserve asset. However, the council rejected the proposal at a meeting held last Tuesday (10).

On the other hand, companies such as Tesla, Metaplanet and Semler Scientific followed Saylor’s strategy and continue to have (and accumulate) BTC in their cash.
