MIT research points to Bitcoin as the big disappointment of 2024

The year 2024 began surrounded by optimism with emerging technologies such as Bitcoin, cryptocurrencies, generative artificial intelligence, 5G and augmented reality.
However, research carried out by the TEC Institute, in partnership with MIT Technology Review Brasil, revealed that many of these innovations did not meet the expectations generatedbecoming major technological disappointments. Among them, Bitcoin stood out as the biggest failure of the year, according to the report.
Despite an appreciation of more than 140% in 2024, Bitcoin was considered disappointing by experts. André Miceli, CEO of MIT Technology Review Brasil, explains that the appreciation did not come along with a significant increase in cryptocurrency adoption.
One of the factors that limited expansion was the advancement of digital currencies issued by central banks (CBDCs), such as the digital yuan and the digital euro. These assets gained space and reduced the appeal of traditional cryptocurrencies.
Bitcoin among the technologies that most disappointed
Additionally, regulatory barriers and a lack of infrastructure for crypto payments continued to hamper large-scale adoption. As an example, Miceli highlighted that “it is still not possible to leave the house and make a purchase in Bitcoin in a simple and accessible way.”
The price of Bitcoin has declined in the last 24 hours, but continues to trade at the level of US$100,000.
The withdrawal was not limited to Bitcoin. Other technologies were also highlighted as disappointments in 2024.
Autonomous vehicles, for example, have faced delays due to regulatory issues and safety flaws. About that, Meta’s metaverse was hampered by low adoption and technical issues. Quantum computing and 5G have also fallen short of expectations due to challenges in practical implementation.
However, the scenario for 2025 could bring significant changes. Miceli believes that the election of Donald Trump in the United States could favor the adoption of cryptocurrencies. According to him, Trump has a close relationship with figures like Elon Musk and a positive view of the sector.
The research also highlighted that the speed of technological evolution depends on several factors, such as regulation, investment and public perception. Thus, 2025 promises to be a decisive year for technologies that, until now, have faced more challenges than achievements.
