The British pension fund Cartwright, renowned for its work in hybrid pension plans, announced an investment of 3% of its total capital in Bitcoin (BTC).
In a decision described as a “bold step”, the fund aims to diversify its assets and adapt to new investment trends, seeking to prepare for long-term economic challenges.
The news was revealed last Monday and marks Cartwright as the first UK pension fund to incorporate Bitcoin into its portfolio.
Sam Roberts, director of investment consultancy at Cartwright, a fund that currently has around 2 billion dollars under management, highlighted that the movement reflects the search for innovative solutions to strengthen the financial structure of pension plans.

“Managers want to integrate bitcoin as a strategic asset, taking advantage of its asymmetric risk-return profile,” Roberts said.
According to him, the addition of bitcoin expands the fund’s diversification and creates a solid financial alternative to the volatility of traditional markets.
The process of including bitcoin in Cartwright’s portfolio involved months of research and detailed analysis. The final decision, which culminated in an investment of more than US$60 million in Bitcoin, followed a rigorous due diligence process and robust risk analysis.
Cartwright points out that, with this action, he wishes to guarantee the stability and growth of the fund without depending exclusively on employer contributions.
According to Roberts, implementing a secure custody approach to managing bitcoin is part of the plan. He believes that, in this way, the fund will be better prepared to generate long-term value for its members, while ensuring protection and security for digital assets.
Roberts also highlighted that BTC was selected because its finite nature differentiates it from other cryptocurrencies, a characteristic that, according to him, “adds unique value to the portfolio”.
