NASA On their way to the moon – The Orion spacecraft, which has been on its way to the moon since Wednesday, has taken images of the Earth. The American space agency NASA shared the images on Twitter. The video shows the space shuttle flying further and further away from Earth.

Orion launched on Wednesday with the most powerful rocket ever built. The space flight to the moon is the first mission of the Artemis space program.

During the Artemis I mission, the currently unmanned Orion spacecraft flies to the moon. Once there, Orion floats in orbit around the moon for six days. The space shuttle will then return to Earth to land with a splash in the Pacific Ocean on December 11.

The second Artemis mission is scheduled for May 2024. Then this space flight will be performed again with astronauts aboard Orion. The third Artemis mission should take place in 2025. Then astronauts will set foot on the moon for the first time in more than fifty years.

NASA wants a permanent base on the moon by 2028

The Artemis program extends beyond the manned lunar missions of the late 1960s and early 1970s. That Apollo program became known through Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon. For the Apollo program, astronauts performed lunar walks and rides in a lunar rover, among other things.

NASA said in 2019 that it wants to build a permanently manned base on the moon by 2028. The knowledge that the organization gains in this way should contribute to manned space travel to Mars.
