Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has revealed his plans for the next phase of blockchain development, called “Surge”.
In a technical post published on October 17, Buterin highlighted the main objectives of this update, which aims to significantly increase the speed and efficiency of Layer 2 networks (L2s), making them even faster and more interoperable.
The watchword is to scale the Ethereum network to more than 100,000 transactions per second (TPS), a milestone that will revolutionize blockchain performance.
The main goal of the Surge update is to make Ethereum and its L2 solutions work as a single cohesive network, eliminating fragmentation between different blockchains.
Ethereum-centric rollups
Currently, L2s allow faster and cheaper transactions outside the main network (Layer 1), while maintaining the security of the original blockchain. However, this approach brought new challenges, such as communication difficulties between L2s and a still confusing user experience.
As Buterin highlighted, to reach the goal of 100,000 TPS, it will be necessary to improve interoperability between these networks, making Ethereum operate as a unified ecosystem.
The smoother integration will allow users to transfer tokens between different L2s without the complexity of using manual bridges or converting tokens to pay transaction fees, simplifying the process and attracting more adopters to the ecosystem.
The solution proposed by Buterin, called “rollup-centric roadmap”, has already started to show its results with the introduction of the Dencun update, which brought advances such as reduced data costs and lower rates in L2 networks.
However, critics have pointed out that this strategy could divert users and revenue from the mainnet, creating new security risks for Ethereum. Still, Buterin remains confident that the rollup-based solution is the best path to long-term scalability.
Rollups, such as Optimistic and ZK-rollups, process the execution of transactions outside of the main blockchain while maintaining the security of Ethereum. Buterin’s vision is to make these L2 solutions completely inherit the core properties of the main network, making them more robust and efficient over time.
