New History! Esports Officially Becomes a Sport at PON XXI Aceh-Sumut 2024

Todaysgist.com, Jakarta – The 21st National Sports Week (PON) in Aceh-North Sumatra will be a new history for sports in Indonesia. For the first time, esports is included as an official sport.

Previously, esports was only an exhibition sport at PON XX Papua. The Minister of Youth and Sports (Menpora), Dito Ariotedjo, said that the esports venue at PON XXI was one of the best venues and the development of national esports achievements.

“In addition to capturing potential talents from all over the country, the esports sport is expected to be a preparation for the first 2025 Esports Olympics,” said Minister of Youth and Sports Dito.

Support Local Games: Lokapala and Battle of Guardians

PB ESI emphasized the importance of supporting local games created by the nation’s children in this event. Two local games, namely Lokapala and Battle of Guardians (BOG), will be competed.

Lokapala is the official game for competing for PON medals, while BOG is still in the exhibition category.

Esports at PON XXI 2024: A Place to Prove Indonesian Esports Talent

The esports branch at PON XXI will compete in five major games, namely Mobile Legends: Bang-Bang (MLBB), PUBG Mobile, Free Fire, eFootball, and Lokapala.

In addition, Battle of Guardians and Honor of Kings (HOK) will be present as exhibition numbers. A total of 260 athletes from 24 provinces will compete in this event.

Esports is now more than just a game. It is a huge industry with the potential to strengthen the creative economy and introduce Indonesia to the world stage.

With full support from the government, Indonesia is expected to be able to compete in the upcoming Esports Olympics.
