Niterói City Hall adopts blockchain to modernize public transport

THE Niterói City Hall announced this week an innovative partnership with the Fluminense Federal University (UFF) and Cartesi to integrate blockchain technology to the city’s public transport system.
According to the announcement, the initiative promises transform contract management service provision and improve user experience, bringing more transparency, efficiency and reliability to the sector.
The project will use blockchain directly in MobNit, a system that manages data about bus locations and routes. With implementation, all service and contract information will be recorded in an immutable and traceable waymaking fraud more difficult and strengthening public supervision.
In addition to improving contract management, the project foresees the launch of an application integrated with MobNit. Passengers will be able to check timetables, itineraries and even register complaints or suggestions, such as delays or problems on the buses.
Blockchain enables new functionalities for users
The difference is that all these interactions will be stored on the blockchain. This way, it will be possible to monitor public administration responses in a transparent manner.
The development of the solution was born during the Hackathon@SBRC’24, an event organized by Cartesi and the Niterói Department of Science and Technology. The competition challenged participants to create blockchain-based solutions for public services, resulting in the proposal that will now go to implementation.
Antônio Rocha, professor at UFF, highlighted the positive impact of the initiative:
The project, with an estimated duration of 12 months, already has its first deliveries scheduled. Cartesi’s technology, according to Rocha, simplifies implementation, allowing for faster results.
Several cities in Rio de Janeiro have adopted Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies. Recently, the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) entered into an unprecedented partnership with Blockchain Rio Produções e Eventos LTDA, to offer a training course aimed at teachers, students and the institution’s social body.
