OpenAI Announces AI-Powered Search Engine SearchGPT, Ready to Compete with Google

Todaysgist.com, Jakarta – OpenAI, creator of the artificial intelligence-based smart chatbot ChatGPT, has announced an AI-powered search engine, SearchGPT.

Quoting The Verge, Friday (26/7/2024), SearchGPT is an AI-powered search engine with real-time access to information across the internet.

Search engines usually start with a big text box that asks the user “What are you looking for?”. However, instead of displaying a simple list of links, SearchGPT tries to organize and understand them.

In one example from OpenAI, their search engine summarizes its findings about a music festival and then serves up a short description of the event, followed by an attribution link.

In another example, it explains when to plant tomatoes before sorting through the different types of plants. Once the search results appear, users can ask follow-up questions or click on the sidebar to open other relevant links. The Verge also mentions that SearchGPT also has a feature called “visual answers.”

However, SearchGPT is currently just a prototype. According to OpenAI spokesperson Kayla Wood, the search engine service is powered by the GPT-4 model family and is currently only accessible to 10,000 testers when it was announced.

“OpenAI works with third-party partners and uses live content feeds to generate its search results. The goal is to eventually integrate live search features into ChatGPT,” Wood said.
