The Federal Police launched Operation Rapax this Thursday (26), with the aim of dismantling a criminal organization involved in human trafficking and money laundering, including through cryptocurrencies.

According to a statement from the PF, the operation resulted in the execution of six search and seizure warrants in the states of São Paulo, Goiás, Paraná and Mato Grosso do Sul. In addition, the agents served a preventive arrest warrant for one of those being investigated. .

The PF also ordered the blocking of securities and cryptocurrency wallets of those being investigated, as part of measures to stop the scheme. As highlighted by the PF in a note, the amounts can total up to R$26 million.

The investigation revealed the existence of a criminal network with branches in Brazil and Europe, especially in Croatia and Belgium. The organization was responsible for agency, grooming and recruitment of Brazilian women for sexual exploitation and forced labor abroad.

Human trafficking and cryptocurrency money laundering

In addition to human trafficking, those involved benefited from a complex financial structure, using cryptocurrencies and other fraudulent methods, such as the creation of shell companies and the use of intermediaries to move resources obtained from illegal activities.

One of the main aspects investigated by the operation was the use of cryptocurrencies to launder money obtained from crime. Authorities identified that the organization used digital assets both to transfer profits generated by exploitation and to hide the illicit origin of these funds.

The ease of movement and anonymity offered by cryptocurrencies has been a factor that attracts criminal organizations.

International cooperation was essential for the success of the operation, according to the PF. Europol, together with police forces in Belgium and Croatia, collaborated with the investigations, helping to identify and dismantle the organization’s European core. Close collaboration between Brazilian and European authorities allowed significant progress in the investigations.

The investigations continue with the analysis of the seized materials and the implementation of other measures, aiming to completely dismantle the criminal network.
