Phantom, a Solana-based decentralized finance (DeFi) wallet, has issued an urgent update to its iOS app. This update occurred after an outage unexpectedly logged some users out of their accounts.

According to the Phantom team, the flaw prevented several iOS wallet users from accessing their accounts unless they had backed up their recovery phrases. In other words, she practically restarted the systems.

The statement states that the failure began on Wednesday (13) and affected a small portion of Phantom users on iOS. “We are aware that a small number of iOS users are experiencing app resets,” the wallet announced on its X account.

“If you are among them, you can restore your wallet using your recovery phrase,” he continued. Many users, however, were afraid to comment because they thought the wallet had suffered an attack.

Later, the Phantom team confirmed the release of a new iOS update to prevent more people from facing the same problem. They also advised all users to safely back up their recovery phrases and apologized for the situation.

Reports of the issue first surfaced on social media earlier in the day, when some iOS users reported being disconnected unexpectedly. This happened when they updated the wallet to the latest version.

One individual asked Phantom why its app had reset itself overnight and removed all of its wallets. Another noted: “Phantom deleting people’s wallets with the latest update… Many tokens will be burned by people who forgot to back up their keys.”

The issue appeared to affect those who had not backed up their passwords, an important recovery step in self-custodial wallets like Phantom. Anyone who did not write down the words was unable to restore the wallet, losing access to all tokens.

Because the service operates as a self-custodial wallet, the platform cannot recover a user’s funds if they lose their password or fail to back it up.

Graphite Protocol founder Tom highlighted the situation, reporting that the recent “ghost update” resulted in huge losses for wallet holders. At the same time, the case highlights the importance of recording passwords securely whenever creating a new wallet.
